cross training

I recently got another road bike for cross training. I noticed that I breathe alot harder than recumbent but it makes me faster on recumbent.  Because I use different muscles on road bike and the lungs in the upright position arent opened up fully, I am a mile or two faster on recumbent than before. I still have numbness in left hand on road bike(50 years on them), but I have alleviated it by using tri -bars on the flat roads. I love how road bikes are so compact to transport.   For long rides however(over 50 miles), nothing beats a recumbent in my opinion.
