    At 70 y/o. I hear you. I’ve adjusted my cycling to match my age. My average speeds are down but I keep my distances up between 30-50 miles. You can’t change the wind, but, you can adjust your sales.

    My point is that the knees were painful before being replaced.  On relatively flat terrain my speed was still as good as i was ten or more years ago.  I simply had a problem with climbing, as that irritated the knees.  Now that the knees are not in the equation anymore I'm able to train and maintain or even improve my speed.
