Arm Coolers (how well do they work)

The Mid Atlantic 12/24 is coming up in August.  It will be hot and humid. I do not do well in the high heat and humidity.  In the last 2 years I have stopped after 100 miles due to the heat and humidity.  I hope to do better this year and am considering trying arm coolers to help me deal with the heat and humidity.

Are they worth trying?

I almost always have arm warmers or arm coolers on.  Some mfr's make the coolers in pretty colors ... which defeats the purpose.

DeSoto makes good arm coolers, though the material is quite fragile.  But worth it.  Other bike clothiers make good coolers with stronger material ... though I don't sense a problem with heat dissipation among them all.

Without the coolers I simply get hot, sunburned and pre-cancerous.

Heat management is a key consideration on anything of distance.  I wear a `shroud' over my head.  Consider getting something from Coolibar and cut and paste it to accommodate your need.  The shroud covers the exposed sections past the helmet and wraps over my cheeks, exposing only my mouth, nose and eyes.

Coolibar also makes gloves (black and white) that have very, very lightly applied sticky pads on them.  I wear white in summer and dark/black in rest of year.

For cooling: they work well in dry air as they allow you to keep sweat, or water, on your skin to be evaporated. If your arms are already wet all the time without them they do not work so well.

For sunscreen: some of them are better than others, but the heavier ones work well. No need for sunscreen underneath.

For fairing: maybe, if your arms have a high Chewbacca number.

Jim ... as a default I agree with you re: no sunscreen underneath.  As a default.  But a) the mfr recommends it, b) I notice that I get skin discoloration (sunburn) when I only wear the arm cooler without the sunscreen.

So why not just use long sleeve jersey? I use a long sleeve jersey and tights in Texas on most rides. What is the advantage of arm sleeves? Similar to Doc Dan I use the Sunprecaution head cover: http://www.sunprecautions.com/product/38100 and gloves. One skin cancer mole and I became a believer in covering up and having a full body doctor review annually for suspicious moles

I started buying only long sleeve jerseys a couple seasons ago. There are times when I like to be able to pull up the sleeves so I go for the fuller cut. Carried sun protectors for arms for years. Just wet them down for cooling. Couldn’t see the need for specific hot weather gear.
